Why Bioderma is so 2013…

Ok so I know the title of this post could be construed as inaccurate and that Bioderma burst onto the UK beauty scene in 2012 but 2013 was the year I said ‘bye bye’ to Bioderma as part of my cleansing routine.  Let’s go back to the beginning, April 2012 to be precise where I first began dabbling with Bioderma.  The Crealine H20 solution was one of those products that seemed to blow up in the blogging community and everybody was desperate to get their hands on it.  We longed for French getaways so we could visit pharmacies and if we didn’t have one of those on the horizon we’d use eBay to satisfy our micellar water needs.  I myself had a few bottle in stock and replenished frequently.

I loved Bioderma.  I’d use it to remove my makeup every evening, correct eyeliner mistakes and used it in the morning for a quick skin refresh.  I was hooked on the stuff even going as far as using ONLY Bioderma to take my makeup off at night.  When I was testing a new cleanser my Bioderma would be used as a pre cleanse and once my review was on my blog I simply switched back to just the Bioderma.
Then around August last year I notices that my skin’s quality had decreased significantly regardless of which products I was using.  The dry patches I’d worked so hard to get rid of were back, my blackheads were bigger and I was getting more spots.  After racking my brains I finally realised it was my cleansing routine that was the culprit, more accurately, my reliance on micellar water.  A combination of my laziness and my reliance on Bioderma had ruined my skin.  I immediately stopped using it and began cleansing with one of the MANY cleansers I had accumulated and do you know what? The problems went away within a few weeks.
It was at that point I made the decision to end my relationship with my Crealine H20 solution.  Don’t get me wrong as a pre cleanse it worked a charm but I had become lazy because of it.  I figured if I cut it out all together then the laziness would not return and I’m proud to say I’ve cleansed my face with cleanser every morning and night since September 2013.  This post is my plea to anybody who is relying 100% on micellar water for all their makeup removal. STOP NOW BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE! Add some cleanser back into your routine, please I beg you!!  For me, I had to take the drastic action and cut it out of my routine completely but if you can’t bare to part with it completely, at least only use it as a precleanse
Of course, there is still a bottle of Bioderma lurking in my bathroom cupboard for eye makeup emergencies only (which there have probably been about two of since last year).  I can’t bare to have nothing whatsoever but I think when that bottle is done so will myself and Bioderma be.   I don’t think I’m quite ready to let go of it all together just yet but that day is not too far off and do you know what? It won’t be that great of a loss.

  • I've just stocked up with 3 large bottles of Bioderma, and I picked up some of the Bioderma wipes, I think like you I've fallen to rely on it, which I shouldn't… I think I'll continue to use it to remove my makeup, but start following up with my Clarins gentle foaming cleanser again (what I was doing until the last few weeks). I've noticed my skin getting drier too so maybe this is why!

  • Bioderma made my skin get horrid, slightly tender dry patches too after a while of use. I only use it for makeup mistakes and to remove really heavy eye makeup these days!

  • I've never really fallen for the hype of bioderma, I used a small bottle of the one for oily skin but once it a used up I didn't rush out to repurchase, really loved this post 🙂

  • Amy

I've never used Bioderma, but did pick up a micellar water when in Prague last year and ended up relying on that for makeup removal/cleansing. If I remember rightly my skin did get better after I used up the entire bottle and went back to normal cleansers. Great for makeup removal, but probably not great for the skin in the long run it seems! x

  • I've always wanted to try the Bioderma micellar water but I may have to think about it after reading this post and the above comments. It's great to hear such an honest review of a cult product! 🙂

  • I've been on edge about trying Bioderma for this exact reason so I'm so glad you posted this! This is what the blogging community is all about xx

  • A fab, honest review. I definitely don't think a micellaire water should be the only thing used to remove makeup and agree that it should be used alongside a good cleanser to remove makeup and dirt from skin.

    • I agree! I don't want to become dependant on it again though which is why I've cut it out completely! x

  • I never actually used Bioderma but I do use a micellar lotion by Omega Pharma. I use it after taking most of my make-up off with a cleansing milk though.

  • So true, I got way too lazy using bioderma and when I used my face brush after I saw so much makeup coming off! Made me realise it's a first step sort of cleanser not in place of a proper skincare regime! Great post 🙂 xx

  • I'm reading so many posts in the past few weeks where people are realising that Bioderma isn't a cleanser, merely a makeup remover! x

    • I think because it's such a good makeup remover I forgot that it wasn't cleaning my skin! x

  • Interesting post! Have always pined over Bioderma but my mind has started to change!
    Great review 🙂

  • I only use my Bioderma to tidy up the panda eyes that my Liz Earle cleanser leaves behind, I can understand how it's easy to become lazy with it though!

  • I've only ever used Bioderma for my eye makeup because I don't think it's enough for my face makeup. Sometimes if I wear a lot of makeup that day, I'll use a little bit of it to help take off some of my makeup off first before going in with something like the Clinique cleansing balm.

  • I always use a cleanser as well! My skin doesn't feel clean otherwise.

  • I've never tried Bioderma micellar water, but as everybody I got excited about what everybody said about the magaic of micellar water and I bought Eveline CLEANSING MICELLAR SOLUTION. I've just finished my first bottle and to be honest I am very happy with the results. I had problems with my skin and my dermatologist also recommended using micellar water but she said that it is not enough. So I use a face cleanser as well. I was considering buying a second bottle of micellar water….but may be I should reconsider….

  • I never got on with Bioderma. I only use micellar waters to remove makeup, can't beat a cleanser 🙂

  • I never actually got on with micellar water, my Liz Earle cleanse and polish will forever be my HG!

  • Thakn you for this post! I have been bad bad beauty blogger and I haven´t even tried any of those micellar waters yet 😛

    • I don't think your a bad blogger at all! I won't be using it again!! x

  • Great post! I only use my L'Oreal Micellar Water for eye makeup and then double cleanse. If I get in really late after a night out I use it as a first cleanse, but it's pretty rare xx

  • Thanks! =)

  • Great post, I've not tried Bioderma and now don't want to! It's good to hear your honest thoughts on it 🙂
