My Mac Lipstick Collection

I think it’s safe to say that Mac is one of the most popular brads when it comes to Lipstick. I started my Mac lipstick collection around £18 month ago on the Back to Mac scheme where I bought my first one, ‘Girl About Town.’ I think it’s safe to say I became a huge fan and since then, my collection has continued to grow. I’ll be the first to admit it’s not going to be the biggest collection that you’ve ever seen but it works really well for me. I still use every one of these shades on a bi-weekly basis. When it comes to lips, I was a nudey/pale pink girl but lately I’ve been getting more adventurous with the colours I’ve been trying.

I probably add to my collection, on average about once every 2-3 months so I’m sure this video will be out of date very quickly. I’m always keen to know what everybody’s favourite Mac lipstick shade is so please tell me what I need to add to my collection in the comment below.

The Battle Against Dry Skin

My tale is truly a story of 'be careful what you wish for,' as when I was a teenager I would pray to the Skin Gods every night for my skin to be a little bit drier.  As you can probably tell, I was blessed with very oily skin as a teen that I didn't know how to handle.  Make-up would slide off my face and power was my BFF!  Fast forward ten years and my predicament is at the other end of the skin condition spectrum.  As a 23 year old I have skin that can only be described as 'drier than the Sahara Desert,' (No seriously, that's how the lady at Kiehl's described it to to me when determining my skin type!!)

I do however, find drier skin more manageable that I did it it's oilier days so I thought I would share with you all the products I use to keep it in check.

I've learnt the hard way that even the products that you cleanse with can have a drying effect on the skin.  I've always been a fan of foamy cleansers but as my skin has got drier I've noticed how tight my skin feels after using them.  This is when I made my decision to switch to a cleansing balm or a hot cloth cleanser.  My favourite is the Emma Hardie one.  I find that it cleanse, exfoliates and moisture's my skin all at the same time and my skin always feels refreshed, never dry after I use it.

Hydraluron is a recent addiction to the 'Alies' after reading so much about it on Andy's blog.  To cut a long story short, it basically allows the skin to holding on to more moisture thanks to the hyaluronic acid.  I apply this before I apply my moisturiser  face mask both in the morning and at night to ensure that maximum moisture is locked in!

This moisturiser is one of my favourite day time creams.  I'm also using it at night whilst I hunt for something more intensive but for now it will do.  I find that this moisturiser is fantastic at keeping skin hydrated throughout the day.  Best of all though, is while it is working for you skin, it also creates a perfect base for your makeup.

Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado
This is a fairly new addition to the forces as eye cream is something I was desperate to add to my routine.  My normal moisturiser is too heavy for my eye areas so I had to look for something more specific.  It's really important to keep the eyes hydrated as it keeps them looking younger for longer by slowing down the wrinkle process.

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask
Once a week, I treat my skin to a face mask or two.  I always make sure that one of those masks is a hydrating one and usually it is the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask.  At first I couldn't get my head around going to bed with a face mask on but when I could see the result in the morning I was soon singing a different tune.  I find that this stuff gives the extra moisture my skin needs and if I'm having a particularly dry weeks I'll sometimes treat my skin to two nights of this.  It smells divine which is a big bonus and I find it very calming just before bedtime.  I also use the mask on planes when travelling long haul as it soaks in quickly and is transparent so you don't look like a weirdo when reapplying once an hour!

If I have a dry skin patch, my Advanced Night Repair is not a product I dive for first (that is usually the hydraluron) but it most certainly helps on an 'every other day' basis.  If I have a red, dry patch spring up I know that by adding this product in to my normal evening routine it will have it gone by morning.  This stuff is like gold (ha, for the price you'd expect it to contain little flecks of it!) and works well on the skin for a number of different ailments and combating dryness is just one of the many.  I'll never not be without a bottle of this in my collection as it can be applied before moisturiser, Hydraluron or a face mask!

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream
For me, this is the 'Daddy' of my skincare routine to battle my dry skin.  I've been using eight hour cream for around eight years now as an intensive overnight treatment.  I only apply it to my problem areas as over use of this stuff can clog my pores in a major way.  If I have a particularly dry patch that just won't clear even after using everything above I find that a night or two of this and my skin is bouncy and moist again.  It also makes a great lip treatment for dry lips which I unfortunately suffer from also (whole other story)

So that's how I keep my skin looking peachy and hydrated.   I've recently dipped my toe in the 'face oil' pool and I've been quite surprised with the results.  I've heard that face oils are excellent for dehydrated skin so watch out for my musings on them in the future.  This was really only a quick overview into the products that I use but I've reviewed most of the above products in greater detail on my blog before so just click on the name for a more in-depth review!

And to my dry skinned ladies, holla at me what are your dry skin saviours?

Mac Russian Red Lipstick

"You can see my heart beating, you can see it through my chest. I'm terrified, but I'm not leaving.  I know that I must pass this test, so just pull the trigger..."

Whoops wrong Mac lipstick colour!!  Haha if you didn't know, those are Rihanna lyrics and for some reason when I think of Mac's Russian Red I think of this song called 'Russian Roulette'.  Don't worry a 'RiRi Woo' review will be comping up on the blog soon but for now, lets talk about Mac's 'other' popular red shade.

Mac's Russian Red is the first lipstick that I have ever owned.  As you know if you've followed LMC for a while, I'm a neutrals girl when it comes to the lip area;  I like muted pinks and natural nelly shades.  Only so often will I step out and purchase a more daring, vibrant colou for my lips.  For me 'Russian Red' is just that, vibrant!  A deep red with gorgeous blue undertones and a matte finish that will suit a lot of skin tones, even paley's like me!  Of course, it comes in the standard black bullet packaging and it is part of the core collection.  This is a super pigmented shade, almost too pigmented actually as it transferes to anything that graces your lips and it's quite tough to remove.  Of course the benefit to that is that it doesn't budge.  Whenever I've worn it, it's lasted at least 4 hours and thats through a two course meal and plenty of wine.

I've found the best way to apply Russian Red is with a lip brush in the first instance then followed by applying directly from the bullet to really ensure that the colour won't fade.  The consistency is creamy and even though it is matte I've haven't found it to be particularly drying on my lips.  Actually as far as my hopes for my first red lipstick, this has ticked all the boxes and might actually be perfect!  Russian Red is a beautiully elegant shade that can be dressed up or down and look as dramatic as you want it too.

Russian Red is priced at £14.00 from mac counters.  You can see my other Mac lipstick reviews here:

My Mac Eyeshadow Quad

I was never a lover of eyeshadow when I was younger.  I wasn't phased by it and I wouldn't have even been able to tell you about about how to highlight your crease or even that you should use a different shade in your crease!  However since blogging, creating my own customary Mac Eyeshadow palette has been something I've been dreaming of doing.  I love my Urban Decay Naked Palette but it annoys me that there are certain colours in there that I'll never use.  Of course the down side to building a mac one is the cost.  To fill a palette of 15 different shades is going to cost upwards of about £150, which I think you will agree is an eye watering amount to pay out at one time.

I've been building my collection very slowly, over the space of a year or so and I though't I'd show you my current favourites.  I do have a big 15 eyeshadow palette but I put my most used, 'everyday' shades into my quad so that I can carry it around with me in my makeup bag.  I love the see through cover on the Mac palettes as its so easy to see what shades go together without even opening the product (a lazy girls dream.)  So without further ado, let me introduce you to my Mac Eyeshadow Quad, aka my favourite mac eyeshadows of the moment.

Naked Lunch
Naked lunch is probably my most worn Mac eyeshadow ever!  I've seen many people say that it has barely any pigment and as you can see from the arm swatch they are probably right. However, for everyday work wear I want something subtle that will still brighten up my lids and make me look a little less tired and drab.  Well, Naked Lunch is perfect for that.  I find it immediately adds some light to my eye area but isn't glitterly and in your face which makes it perfect for work everyday.  Also, I don't really spend too much time on my eyeshadow of a morning as I'd rather have a few more minutes in bed so this does all the jobs I need it too!

Woodwinked
Woodwinked is a fairly new shade to my Mac collection.  I bought it after having it recommended to me when asking on Twitter what shades I should add to my collection.  As you can see it is the perfect bronzed shade, or warm antiqued brown and when I want my eye make up to have a little more too it (but not full on smokey) this is the shade I go for.  I use Woodwinked as an all over the lid shade.  It has a 'veluxe pearl' finish to it which gives it is smooth, shimmery finish that almost looks like it's two colours blended into one.  When I first started using it I was hesitant as i thought it looked slightly orange on the eye but when you take a bit of time to work with it and blend it, it can look absolutely gorgeous

Sable
Sable was another colour that came up in a Q&A Twitter session.  I'd bought Cranberry (see below) and I wasn't quite sure what to team it with.  So many people suggested Sable as an over the lid colour with Cranberry in the crease.  It's now one of my favourite combinations to wear when I'm feeling swish and want to dress my eyes.  Sable also makes the perfect crease colour for 'Naked Lunch' and that is the combo I wear everyday to work to give my eyes a tiny bit of depth too them.  It is an extremely versatile colour which I also use when going for a brown smokey eye.  It has a 'frost' finish and is like a cross between brown and plum which is why it probably works so well with Cranberry.  It leaves an eye catching finish to the eyes and can really make them pop.

Cranberry
Cranberry is one of those colours that has seemed to explode all over the blogosphere.  It was like it just popped up out of no where and everybody was talking about it.  Buying into the hype, I went out and bought it and then thought to myself, 'So how am I actually going to use this?'  I tried lots of different combinations and finally found one that suits my pale skin; Sable all over the lid with a hint of Cranberry in the crease.  Cranberry is a shade that you must be oh so careful with.  I recommend building it up slowly rather than going for all out colour in the first instance.  I think it is so easy for this colour to go wrong and leave you looking like your ill with 'deathly' eyes.  I found an excellent article by Temptalia which really helped me see how you can use Cranberry to it's full potential.  I think darker skinned ladies (or men) will be able to maximise their use with this colour so much more than the snowmen of the world like myself.  I'm extremely jealous!

So that was my current Mac Quad.  This post has given me the urge to go out all add another shadow to my collection.  Do you have any suggestions?
